Welcome - Let the Home DIY Begin!

Ahhhhhh, I started a blog!!!

What a year it's been, it's definitely been one for new chapters such as this, and to also take on one of my biggest adult purchases to date, my first home.

Back in Dec 2018, my husband (then partner) and I bought our first house together – something neither of us had done before. We wanted to have a source of long-term financial freedom, and it’s known that homeownership is one of the best ways to do that (our parents were also good for nagging us individually on that tip - "You've got a job now, so buy, buy, buy!"). EASIER SAID THAN DONE, BUT WE DID IT! Outside of finances, wanting a space without neighbors on the other side of the wall was the most motivating part for me – HELLOOO peace and quiet!

After buying, life kind of sped up on us. On Feb 14th 2019 we got engaged, yes, HE was cliché like that 😊, but by the summer of that year we made up for it by doing a not so cliché thing by getting married not just once but twice, for our Nigerian and American weddings - ceremonies that honored my husbands Nigerian-American culture and my African-American culture.

Now that 2020’s arrived, we had this year to settle down from the chaos of weddings and travel to officially focus on the house we bought almost a year ago. With an eagerness to enjoy it, comes fixing some of its quirks and boy did we have the time and need for a distraction from everything happening around the world right now to tackle it. COVID hasn’t been easy on our family and neither has the stress of the issues of equality in this country, though it’s been tough we’ve been able to find ways to navigate through it that humble us and make us appreciative of the good that is going on despite the optics.

Like I said though, I welcome the space we have to focus on this little distraction, ESPECIALLY given it allows my husband and I to stretch our money saving skills. Ya’ll will see throughout this journey I LOVE to save a dollar where possible, as long as I can keep good quality, which is imperative when you own a home where DIY-able projects that are not DIY'd but contracted out can cost you hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of dollars – money we’d like to save elsewhere, like for our family, investing in additional real estate, travel, or anything else you can do in this multi-faceted life.

With all this being said, maybe some of this resonates with you! If you’ve been wanting to buy a home and would love a peek into the journey of buying and ownership, or own a home and need help with knowing the ins-and-outs of maintaining a home to avoid costly repairs/damage, or have access to a home that just needs good ole' updates via affordable renovations - you’ll be sure to get lots of useful tips, tricks, and insights from here that are simple and relatable!

I’d love to hear from you, what is a pet peeve area in your home you’d love to bring some new life to? Comment with your response below!

Stay tuned for my next blog post for a list of current projects and future projects we’ll tackle! Subscribe here to get notified of project updates!
